Soalheiro, a pioneer in the creation of Alvarinho wine in Melgaço, is an international benchmark for the wines of this grape variety, blending perfectly into the distinctive Minho landscape surrounding it.
In the nineteen seventies (1974), a passion for winemaking led João António Cerdeira, with the support of his father, António Esteves Ferreira, to plant the first Alvarinho vine and to create the first brand of Alvarinho in Melgaço in 1982, and one of the first Alvarinho brands in the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço.
Located in Melgaço (Portugal's northernmost point) it is protected by a range of mountains that create the conditions necessary for the best ripening of Alvarinho grapes. Here, the Alvarinho is special.
The land is protected by a set of mountains that create the rain, temperature and hours of sunshine conditions necessary for the best ripening of the grapes. We hope that you also enjoy its vibrant and elegant expression, something that makes us passionate
A special microclimate
The Alvarinho grapes used in the Soalheiro came from several small vineyards planted in granite soil between 100 and 400 meters and located in a very particular microclimate in Melgaço.Melgaço region, the northern point of Portugal, is protected by a range of mountains that create the perfect conditions of rainfall, temperature and number of hours of sunshine needed to the better ripeness of the Alvarinho grapes.
The brand name – Soalheiro – arises from the excellent sun exposure of the vineyards bearing the same name – a sunny place. A large proportion of the vineyards used in the Soalheiro Clássico comes from Quinta de Soalheiro where the grapes are grown organically, with the aim of promoting the biodiversity of fauna and flora. It is exclusively the fruit from these vines that we use to produce the Soalheiro Terramatter and the Soalheiro Nature.
