Fram Wines

Fram Wines is the independent project of Thinus Krüger, a seasoned Cape winemaker who, after more than a decade at leading estates, set out on his own in 2012. Drawn to vineyards with character rather than prestige, Krüger works across the remote northern Swartland, Piekenierskloof, Citrusdal Mountain, and other distinctive sites in the Western Cape.

Named after the legendary Arctic exploration vessel, Fram reflects Krüger’s desire to chart new territory and craft wines with honesty, texture, and personality. The project emphasises individuality over convention, resulting in a portfolio that is expressive, raw, and deeply connected to place.

Krüger seeks out vineyards with distinct identity - high-altitude plateaus, old dry-farmed parcels, and rugged granitic sites - where natural balance and sustainability can flourish. From limestone soils near Robertson to granitic slopes in the Swartland, each site contributes its own tension, mineral clarity, and varietal expression. Fram Wines are a reflection of these diverse landscapes: precise, textural, and distinctly Western Cape.

Fram Wines follows a philosophy of minimal intervention. Grapes are naturally fermented, oak is carefully chosen from older neutral barrels, sulfites are kept low, and unnecessary additions are avoided. The aim is to preserve the purity of fruit, express vineyard character, and create wines that are alive with energy and personality. The result is a portfolio that balances freshness, texture, and subtle complexity, showing both immediate appeal and the potential for ageing.

The portfolio includes:

  • a vivid, unwooded Chardonnay from limestone soils near Robertson and Bonnievale
  • a lifted and savoury Swartland Shiraz from granitic vineyards around Malmesbury and the Paardeberg
  • a refined Citrusdal Mountain Pinotage from a struggling 1981 vineyard; one of Fram’s most compelling wines
  • and a naturally fermented, multi-vintage, white field blend from a 60-year-old mixed vineyard perched nearly 900 metres above sea level on the Piket-Bo-Berg plateau, offering tension, texture and true vineyard character.

Confident yet unpretentious, Fram Wines embodies the pioneering spirit of the Western Cape’s new wave: wines rooted in exploration, authenticity and the quiet skill of a winemaker who knows exactly when to stand back and let the vineyards speak.
