Doniene Gorrondona

Itziar, Egoitz and Julen own Doniene Gorrondona. They are Pioneers of the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina in giving a total twist to the wines of the area.

Since 1996 Doniene Gorrondona has been working their vineyards and making Txakoli, the wine that has always been produced in Basque farmhouses. They produce wines that are the result of their understanding of the natural environment and viticulture, the uniqueness of the native varieties - Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza - and the soils and biodiversity of their vineyards.

The project arose from a study to revitalize the Bakio area as an historical wine reference. The natural attraction of the valley and the potential they sensed drove them to recover the abandoned vineyards. With the purchase of the Gorrondona farmhouse and the planting of new vineyards, they turned their dream into a life project.

Since its foundation, they have been committed to the creation of a sustainable project with total respect for the environment. The more respectful they are with nature, the higher quality it will offer them in its products (in their case grapes).

The work dynamics are governed by these parameters. They have adopted a series of measures such as the use of cork from certified sustainable farms, the recovery of 15% of cardboard packaging and the selection of barrels from cooperages with forest sustainability certificates.

In 2011 they started a project to create their own aroma bank based on the ecology of their vineyards. They have identified part of the great microbiological richness that exists in each of their vineyards, focusing on those yeasts that ferment the musts conferring the maximum expression of the terroir from which they originate.

Doniene Gorrondona marks the culmination of the transformation of a traditional farmhouse into an authentic winery of excellence.

Located in an emblematic building erected before 1852, there is reliable documentation attesting to the early production of Txakoli in these facilities. Although in the beginning the wines were destined for family consumption, this dynamic changed in the middle of the 20th century.

In 1994, coinciding with the establishment of the Bizkaiko Txakolina Denomination of Origin, their team took the reins of this centenary tradition.

Their work in canopy management is done from an integral and environmentally sustainable point of view. Each plot is managed, harvested (with moderated yield) and vinified separately. Subsequently, they carry out the vinification of each plot separately, thus ensuring the maximum expression of its unique qualities.

Doniene Gorrondona have remarkably diverse soils, giving each plot a unique identity. At their facilities, they emphasise the importance of terroir, embracing soil, variety and microbiota as primary elements.

They conceive winemaking as a minimal intervention aimed at enhancing the authenticity of the terroir, allowing its essence to be fully expressed.
