The Marlborist

The Marlborist is a boutique winery founded in 2020 by three passionate wine professionals—Richard “Rich” Ellis (winemaker), Stuart “Stu” Dudley (viticulturist), and David “Dave” Nash (brand director)—who aim to redefine Marlborough’s wine story by showcasing exceptional terroir through minimal‑intervention winemaking. Nestled in Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, their vineyard sources are chosen with intention: low‑yield blocks from iconic sites like Auntsfield, Ben Morven, The Wrekin, Linklater, Cobden Farm, Stevenson, Joval, and others.

They began with two core releases: Grande Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay following suit.

Their Grande Sauvignon Blanc is a departure from Marlborough’s typical zesty style—hand‑picked fruit undergoes wild fermentation in old French oak puncheons and barrels, and completes malolactic and lees stirring before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The result: a rich, textured white featuring golden-flesh peach, candied pineapple, elderflower, brioche, and a long citrus finish.

Their Pinot Noir, cultivated in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys (notably Auntsfield and The Wrekin), is hand-harvested and driven by natural yeast fermentation, with a portion of whole-cluster fruit and ageing in French oak puncheons.

It delivers a perfumed and complex profile loaded with boysenberry, red plum, lavender, cinnamon‑clove spice, and an earthy, textured finish—an ethereal expression praised by critics such as Decanter and Wine Advocate.

They also release a Chardonnay, lauded for its creamy yet dry elegance, with tasting notes of roasted hazelnuts, brioche, golden nectarine, clove-spice, and a bright citrus finish—unfined, unfiltered, and crafted in a similar low-intervention style.

What sets The Marlborist apart is their “less‑is‑more” philosophy. By blending diligent viticulture, low yields, wild fermentations, and minimal handling, they aim to craft expressive, terroir-driven wines that stand apart from classic Marlborough styles—yet are rooted in deep respect for the land.

Overall, The Marlborist is widely acclaimed as “one of New Zealand’s most exciting wineries,” celebrated for pushing Marlborough’s stylistic boundaries while maintaining strong ties to its terroir and heritage.
