Sauska

Founded by husband and wife team Krisztián and Andrea. They shared a dream of creating a family winery in Tokaj, they believed Hungary was capable of better wines than they had tasted so far. This dream became a reality in 2003, later they acquired the Villány estate. Krisztián brings mathematical methodology and engineering precision to the table and Andrea is the creative behind the family brand.

High above the vineyards the Sauska winery is perched with a view of the natural world that goes on for miles. A landscape shaped by volcanic energy over millions of years shows in every inch of this land: this is the miracle of the Tokaj terroir. To showcase it year after year, vineyard by vineyard, varietal by varietal: this is the Sauska passion.

The diversity of the Tokaj region, especially with the presence of limestone, unlocks special perspectives for dry and sparkling wines in addition to the traditional Aszú. Over the last two decades, in addition to the indigenous varieties Furmint, Hárslevelű and Yellow Muscat, Sauska have also turned to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to showcase their unique character and impressive potential in the Hegyalja region as richly as possible.

They make a dedicated effort to preserve and restore biological diversity in Tokaj, Villány and in their sparkling wine aging cellar in Budapest. Over the past decades, they have worked hard to create self-sustaining ecosystems in which biodiversity does not disturb the external ecological community.

On the parcels of land in Medve (Tokaj) and Makár (Villány/Siklós), surrounded by forest, no chemical or herbicides are used. There is a healthy presence of wildlife, and number of birds and insects. They encourage this biodiversity by strategic planting of shrubbery through the vineyards.

Weed control in both Tokaj and Villány is largely carried out in the traditional way, with straw mowing. A thick blanket of straw covers the ground surface, so it does not get light or air, weeds therefore do not grow on it.

The collection and use of rainwater is key: on the high-elevation Makár vineyard, for example, collected the rainwater that runs off the vineyard into two pools is used for irrigation.

The most beautiful thing about wine is that it means a constant dialogue with nature, people – and one another. The Sauska journey is a chain of conversations with amazing, wonderfully gifted humans and their impact on the resulting wine. Because wine is like that – we often only feel its impact later.
