Château de la Chaize
Château de la Chaize is one of Beaujolais’ most historic and visually striking wine estates. Founded in 1676 and designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart with gardens by André Le Nôtre (both of Palace of Versailles fame), it’s no wonder James Suckling once called it “a very strong candidate for the most beautiful wine Château in France.” The estate, a listed Monument Historique, was revitalised in 2017 under the ownership of Christophe and Boris Gruy, who have ushered in a new era of organic viticulture, sustainability, and precision winemaking.

Covering 150 hectares of vines across Brouilly, Côte-de-Brouilly, Fleurie, and Morgon, it is the largest single-owner vineyard holding in the region. Each of the estate’s 23 vineyard parcels is vinified separately, revealing the character of its terroir through the medium of the traditional Gamay Noir. Fermentations take place in the château’s gravity-fed, 18th-century cuvage - one of the oldest and longest barrel cellars in Beaujolais - followed by extended aging to preserve freshness and structure.
Since 2022, the estate has been fully certified organic and is powered by geothermal and solar energy, part of a wider commitment to carbon neutrality and zero waste. Biodiversity is actively promoted through reforestation and eco-grazing. The result is a collection of elegant, expressive wines that blend centuries of heritage with a progressive environmental vision.
Château de la Chaize has earned international acclaim, including recognition as one of the Top 100 Premium Wine & Spirits Brands by the Luxury Lifestyle Awards. The wines have also gained critical success from forerunning publications including Jancis Robinson MW’s Purple Pages, The Wine Advocate, Decanter, and more.
