      Tasting Notes and Description
Familia Martínez Bujanda is made up of 5 wineries: Finca Valpiedra, Viña Bujanda, Finca Antigua, Cosecheros & Criadoresa and Finca Montepedroso. The wineries are all very different but all have the one common denominator - to make wines of quality from their own vineyards. The 2009 Valpiedra Reserva is built upon 22 months ageing in French oak barrels and is composed of: 92% Tempranillo, 4% Graciano and 4% Maturana Tinta - A nearly extinct Rioja variety that ripens late in contrast to Tempranillo and is a variety that once formed a large part of the Rioja blend.

The 2009 Reserva has a visually striking intense cherry red coloured core and violet rim on initial inspection, with abundant legs and density that only a well crafted wine from a very favourable vintage can possess.

On the nose the intensity continues with complexity presenting and an abundance of red and black fruit showing up, fine wood notes from the oak deliver inflections of vanilla, mint and spice. On the palate, initially, excellent smoothness, volume and density develop and the fine grained tannic structure presents, furthering the savoury and complete palate. The finish is a plethora of sweet fruit, spice, oak and floral notes, a lenghty and resounding aftertaste.

Tim Atkin, British Master of Wine and respected Wine Critic, in his first DOCA Rioja Report awarded this wine 95 points and entices further; "from a warm site above the Ebro River, this is a very stylish wine that's almost Bordeaux-like, with refined French oak, a streak of leafy cassis and graphite, savoury tannins and good ageing potential."

“Combining Tempranillo with 4% each of Maturana Tinta and Graciano from a warm site above the Ebro River, this is a very stylish wine that’s almost Bordeaux-like, with refined French oak, a streak of leafy cassis and graphite, savory tannins and good ageing potential. Top Reserva Wine of the Year."
