      Tasting Notes and Description
Bright pale-yellow colour. The nose is still restrained showing complex, spicy and peppery aromas. On the mouth, the wine shows a great intensity and brightness of flavour. Bright and ripe acidity allows for a harmonious finish, this wine seems at first, quite gentle and eventually opens up to an intense wine dot. It feels really elegant and almost easy to drink. No doubt it will need more time to fully express the characteristic of this great vineyard.

"This has almost exactly the balance that I remember from the great gewurz of the late 20th century. Fragrant Turkish delight character, rich yet dry with a wonderful interplay of ripeness, a mere hint of grape sweetness and complex spiciness. What a beautiful finish! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
      97 points. James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com (April 2023)

The Grand Cru Hengst is produced from two very old plots, located in the south/south-east part of this vineyard. The oldest one dates back to the early 1920s, and the other one was planted by Emile Zind in the early 1950s. These old vines are made with a fantastic old style massal selection of Gewurztraminer grape. The iron rich red Oligocene limestone soil allows for a perfect phenolic maturation of the grapes. Hengst also enjoys a dry and warm ripening conditions, so the grapes tend to remain healthy and do not develop rot (or noble rot) very easily, so the style of this vineyard is often an austere, complex spicy type of wine that also has a natural tannic quality, not far from a light red wine. The healthy 2021 grapes produced a powerful dry Gewurztraminer with a great acidity.
