      Tasting Notes and Description
The property was acquired by George Thienpont in 1946. He then replanted the vines towards the end of the 1970’s. From 1983 onwards, his son Nicolas began making the wine and Chateau Puygueraud was quickly becoming one of the flagship estates of the Côtes de Francs. For several years, and with the assistance of his grandson Cyrille, the wine attained greater precision and a nobler expression of these clay-limestone terroirs thanks to replanting and selection of Cabernet-Franc.

Chateau Puygueraud is produced mainly from Merlot with, however, a proportion of Cabernet that is quite high for the region as well as a touch of Malbec with its peppery character. In 2005, all the Cabernet Sauvignon was pulled up and Cabernet Franc was planted in its place. This variety ripens earlier and is better suited to the terroir of the Cotes de Francs.

Traditional soil management: light ploughing and aeration of the soil with inter-row planting of cereals in the autumn. Continual program of renovation of the vines: grubbing up and replanting. Numerous manual interventions: de-budding, leaf-thinning and green harvest.

In 2020, the choices linked to the impact of the April hail were drastic. With more work in the vineyard, the blend has been subject to increased selection. The wine presents a good maturity of tannins associated with a beautiful tension.

      88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc.

"Lots of blackberry and blueberry character with a salty, minerally under tone. Rather spicy with black earth. It’s full and very polished. Really well crafted. Another excellent Puygueraud."
      92 - 93 points.
      (James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2021)

"The 2020 Puygueraud, a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc growing in clay-limestone soils, exhibits intense and fresh aromas of violet, cassis, blueberry and spring flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy mouthfeel; this is perfectly balanced and will improve with a bit more bottle age. Drink to 2028.
      91+ points."
