      Tasting Notes and Description
Roche Calcaire is essentially a "2nd wine" of the famed Clos Windsbuhl, with the same Calcaire (Limestone) subsoil influence but from younger vines and parcels selected out of the Grand Vin.

Grown in the village of Turckheim, Pinot Gris vineyards are at higher altitudes with very little top soil, resulting in a great structure. Zind-Humbrecht's dedication to terroir expression guides all winemaking practices, which include extended pressing cycles, abbreviated clarification cycles (to retain natural yeasts and proteins in the must), natural malolactic fermentation and extended aging on the lees. The wine is aged 18 months in 40-year-old French barrels.

Winemaker's note - The nose shows the great pedigree of the vineyards it originates, delivering complex fruit aromas (peach, nectarines, quince….) as well as an underlying minerality. It is also quite showy at this young age and will continue to open up with time. The 2019 Roche Calcaire has a beautiful velvety mouth texture that shows great energy. The acidity brings harmony and make the wine taste actually quite dry and delicate.

"Gorgeous, green-gold, baked yellow plum pinot gris gem, from an outstanding family-run Alsace estate."
Jane MacQuitty, The Times (February 2024)

"Here’s a stunning wine for lovers of rich Alsace pinot gris, the very lively acidity enabling it to carry a hint of sweetness without any trouble at all. Serious, chalky structure behind all the flesh and wonderfully bright citrus character at the powerful finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
