      Tasting Notes and Description
Among the elite group of Alsatian wine estates, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht stands alone in its relentless dedication to capturing the taste of each of its distinguished vineyards. In the northeast of France, bordering Germany, Alsace's undulating landscape is draped with vineyards, some on markedly steep slopes. In fact, in the 1960s and 1970s, as their neighbors abandoned their tryingly steep vineyard sites, Zind-Humbrecht took the opportunity to expand the winery's holdings of Grands Crus and other high quality vineyards

Zind-Humbrecht wines are recognised for their overriding sense of terroir because every aspect of viticulture and winemaking is tailored to achieve that goal. Winemaker Olivier Humbrecht has developed an approach based on biodynamics that includes low impact farming, organic composting, restricted yields, hand tending of the vines, native yeasts and long fermentations on the lees in oak barrels rather than stainless steel tanks. All of these efforts serve to counter the homogenisation of wine profiles Olivier sees taking place around the world, in favour of wines that truly reflect a sense of their special place.

Indice: 1 - Intense yellow colour. The Rangen vineyard influence is so recognisable here. The nose is intense, smoky, flinty. There is volcanic dust on the nose. We realize that this is just a way of speaking, but this is the feeling one would get by smelling this wine! The wine covers the palate with a rich saline racy texture. This is an intense and long wine. The acidity kicks in on the finish which is also very dry. Fantastic Rangen! And the more time spend to discover it, the more comes out of the glass. It has so much to say…

"Initial whiffs of flint, apple and smoke dissipate, leaving this wine with a shy, closed nose. The palate still carries residual carbon dioxide that gives a little spritz but all that is just window dressing for a powerful and concentrated core. Yes, there is concentrated lemon, both peel and pith, but a stony expanse underneath makes this profound, smoky and compelling. The finish is bone dry, bracing and racy. Lemon echoes long, carrying stony heat in its cooling breeze."

(Anne Krebiehl MW, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, January 2020)

"Somehow, the golden-yellow colored 2018 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann is reminiscent of a matured Champagne on the very first nose, with ripe but also matured and slightly oxidized fruit aromas, here intermingled with lemon and herbal or minty nuances as well as the flint stone tones of the steep, south-facing volcanic clos. Elegant and even with a certain coolishness, the wine becomes a Rangen pretty soon and from a then abnormally dry and warm vintage as well. It is full-bodied, fresh and elegant rather than rich and powerful on the palate, with good mineral freshness and fine bitters on the pure and saline finish. This is an elegant and even fine Rangen Riesling with less generosity and texture than expected but also more thrill and tension. Still stringent on the long finish, this is an excellent 2018 Riesling from a cru that must have been like hell in the summer of 2018. Bottled in January 2020 with 13.4% alcohol and just 2.7 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted in Wachenheim as part of the Rangen vertical in November 2023 and again in March 2024. Drink to 2050."
