      Tasting Notes and Description
"Mouton Rothschild was always a First Growth Bordeaux wine property in the eyes of the Baron. However, it was considered a Second Growth when the Classification took place in 1855. After existing for over 100 years without a single change, nobody believed the Classification would ever change.

That is nobody except the Baron. He became the only person to succeed in changing the 1855 classification: Château Mouton Rothschild became officially a “Premier Cru Classé” (First Classified Growth).

The 75 hectare vineyard of Chateau Mouton Rothschild is planted to 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This shows a slight change in the vineyard since the mid 1990’s marked by a slight reduction in the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, along with an increase in the Merlot.

The Mouton Rothschild vineyard is old, with vines averaging 50 years of age. However, they have old vines. Some parcels have vines that were planted more than 100 years ago! The oldest vines were cultivated in 1890."

2017 Assemblage - 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 100% New Oak.

"This is a very impressive Mouton. Delicate, yet intense it develops on the palate growing into a polished, refined wine with great persistence and immaculate fruit. It will take time to come round but will ultimately reward those who are patient. Drink 2028 - 45.
      18 Points."
      (Jane Boyce MW)

"Healthy, glowing deep crimson with soft cherry rim. Rocky/smoky cassis lift to the aroma. Fragrant with sober and non-exotic fruit. Serious. Super-fine texture, appears gentle but is very persistent, so fresh and effortless and yet intense and long. Refined and accessible but long term too. Drink 2027-2047.
      Score: 18 Points."
      ( Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2018)

"The 2017 Mouton Rothschild has one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon ever at 90%, with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black in color, the nose is already singing of crushed black currants, warm blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of violets, star anise, cinnamon stick and cloves plus wafts of pencil lead and unsmoked cigars. Medium-bodied, wonderfully delicate yet intense in the mouth (gaining some richness in the mid-palate on my second taste two and a half weeks later), it has super fine-grained, smooth tannins and incredible freshness, finishing very long with tons of tightly wound layers. Wow. This vintage is going to be very long-lived in the cellar!
      Score: 97/99 points."
