Le Casematte

Founded in 2008 by Gianfranco Sabbatino and Andrea Barzagli, Le Casematte is situated within the Messina Province of Sicily.

The winery owes its name to the presence of two small forts or ‘pillboxes’ situated in the vineyard that date back to WW2.

Gianfranco Sabbatino is an accountant by profession and a winemaker by passion. He was later joined by Andrea Barzagni, who is an ex-football player from Florence who shares a passion for Sicilian wine.

With a production of just 50,000 bottles a year, Le Casematte’s philosophy is that ‘Small is beautiful.’

The Vineyard

The vineyard, at an altitude between 820 and 1215, overlooks the Straight of Messina, the stretch of sea that separates Calabria from Sicilia.

The winds coming from the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, that cross in the facing Straight of Messina, create a particular microclimate that greatly favours the temperature range between day and night, even in midsummer, so as not to thermally stress the vines during the delicate ripening phase.

Le Casematte’s currently has 14 hectares under vine, grown with Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, Nero d’Avola, Grillo and Caricante.

The winery exercises organic farming and limit the use of small oak barrels and new wood in order to obtain fresh, terroir driven wines that best express the peculiarities of these indigenous grape varieties.
