Domaine Gayda

Domaine Gayda was built in 1749 as a Staging Post for travellers where horses were refreshed and changed. Owners Tim Ford and Anthony Record joined forces with winemaker Vincent Chansault in 2004, creating the modern face of wine from the region.

On the site of the famous “l’arbre de Moscou”, they built the winery, restaurant and boutique. The tree was a navigation beacon used by the ‘Aeropostale’ pioneers of the air postal service made famous by pilots such as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Domaine Gayda has a passion for the traditional ‘cépages’ grown across the many diverse soils and climates situated throughout the Languedoc.

While the vineyards are firmly rooted in tradition and ‘terroirs’, the winery itself is all about the innovation, with investments in all the latest equipment and technology ensuring vinification and maturation is carried out in optimum conditions.

In the largest wine region of the world, Domaine Gayda strives to create wine with provenance and a sense of “being” that is a true reflection of the quality and diversity of the Languedoc Roussillon.

The Team

Tim Ford – MD. Born in England, Tim’s introduction to wine was through his father, who owned a small vineyard in the southeast of the country. After spending more than 20 years of his life in various African countries where he had a successful horticultural business, he returned to England in 2002. Here he met Anthony Record and together they launched the concept of Domaine Gayda in France.

Vincent Chansault – Winemaker. The youthful face of Gayda, Vincent graduated from the school of Viticulture and Oenology in Cognac and went on to gain valuable experience in the Loire Valley, the Rhone and the Languedoc. Not long into his career he explored the wineries of South Africa where he worked for a number of years in the Stellenbosch area, notably the famous Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek. It was during this time in South Africa that he met Tim Ford, Anthony Record and Marc Kent.

Marc Kent – Consultant winemaker. Tim says, “Marc has been an inspiration to Gayda since we first met him in 2003”. Boss of the iconic South African winery, Boekenhoutskloof, Marc helps out whenever he can with advice and motivation. His blending skills will be seen in Chemin de Moscou, a wine that he has taken to heart.  Recently again voted “South African Winemaker of the Year” in 2019, an accolade he seems to receive on a regular basis, testament to his open mind and fanatical approach to quality.

In the vineyard

More than just the vines around the winery, Gayda’s vineyards spread across the Languedoc, benefiting from the incredible ‘terroirs’ of the region.

From limestone to granite, from slate to sandstone, each soil type adding to the specific character that Domaine Gayda seeks out in the unique diversity of this stunning landscape.

Among the ‘four terroirs’ of Domaine Gayda we are proud to stock those from the estate vineyards (based on sandstone and clay and planted to Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Chenin, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier) as well as La Livinière (based on limestone and planted to Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Carignan (Rouge) and Viognier).

In the cellar

The winery continues to evolve with the use of new techniques and innovations.

Cooling systems have been installed to reduce the use of sulphites and concrete, terracotta and clay are being used for maturation of the wines along with oak ‘foudres’.
