Marjorie Gallet is no stranger to us here at JN and you may have already enjoyed one of her superlative Roc des Anges wines. Having grown up in the Northern Rhône raising horses, Marjorie came to wine out of a sheer passion for the vine. After spending time at fantastic domaines like Cuilleron and Gagnard, she moved to Roussillon in the south west of France, where she met her husband, Stephane Gallet, the then winemaker at Mas Amiel.
They now run their own estate using strict organic and biodynamic farming principles from beautiful vineyards planted on schist soils, and have become the darlings of the Michelin 3-star set in France with their spectacular array of Domaine Le Roc des Anges wines. Last year, Marjorie and Stephane started another project working with local growers to make this fantastically affordable and very drinkable range – Effet Papillon – as a way of creating a line of wines that will draw people to the wines of Roussillon and perhaps incline them to try some of the bigger and pricier wines from the region (hence the “butterfly effect”).

Zippy and fresh, harvested from the iron rich soil just outside of Rivesaltes. It’s a terrific little white, jasmine scented and loaded with fresh melon and apricot fruit. In the mouth, the fruit is exotic and the finish, crisp and fine.

Looking for a great inexpensive red for the summer holidays? Look no further. Made from Carignan and Grenache grapes purchased by Marjorie and Stephanie, this has to be one of the best value reds we have tasted this year. Dark fruit on the nose, brambly with subtle spice nuances and that lovely garrigue character you get in the wines from this region. Fullish, plush and supple on the palate, it is versatile and crowd pleasing.
