Rounded. Mineral and smokey. Very fine, fresh and cleansing but also very concentrated. Very good length, a superb effort. This is a superb vintage for Bouscaut. Lovely freshness and elegance. Stacks of flavour, mainly dense primary fruit, but also some coffee notes riding over the top of dark forest and stone fruit. Great concentration and poise. Terrific length. This punches well above its weight. JN Team, April 2011

“Normally one of the most elegant, kirsch-laden wines of the appellation, this property (owned by the Moueix family) has produced an opaque purple-hued 2010 revealing lots of minerality intermixed with deep, black raspberry and black cherry fruit, a rich, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and abundant tannin. Along with the 2009, the dense 2010 is one of the richest Magdelaines I have ever tasted. Château La Serre, Saint Émilion Grand Cru Classé

Appealing nose. Lovely fruit component on palate, with a little cherry sweetness. Freshness and minerality provide focus. Surprisingly long and textured. La Serre has got better and better in recent vintages, and this is probably their best yet. JN Team, April 2011

Château d’Armailhac, 5ème Cru Pauillac £390 / €440 per 12 bottles
This is heady, rich wine. It displays more kirsch than damson fruit on the nose, which follows through well onto the palate. Very tasty, plenty of flavour, even a touch herbal. Elegant and fresh, with good length and big tannins, but there are masses of fruit content to balance. JN Team, April 2011

Pomerol did really well in 2010. The wines in general offer power but also great freshness. Beauregard produced a great wine in 2010. It is wonderfully textured, has plenty of flavour and density and big, but ripe, integrated tannins. JN Team, April 2011

Easy and fruity nose. Pretty big on the palate, tannins are firm creating good structure. There is plenty of rich fruit to balance – this is also helped by good acidity. Good quality sensibly priced Grand Cru Classé from the dynamic wine making team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt. JN Team, April 2011
Château Haut Bages Liberal, 5ème Cru Pauillac £335 / €375 per 12 bottles
“The finest Haut-Bages-Liberal I have tasted in many years, this sleeper of the vintage exhibits a blue/purple hue as well as projected aromatics of blue and black fruits, spring flowers and subtle background oak. Full-bodied with moderately high tannins, a layered mouthfeel and a long finish, it should be at its best between 2017 and 2035. 91 – 93+ pts. Drink 2017 – 2035.” eRobertParker.com, May 2011
Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Margaux £530 / €595 per 12 bottles
“It is a little unsettling to realize that 2009 and 2010 may be the greatest back to back Bordeaux vintages produced in the history of the region. The over-achieving Giscours has turned in a great performance in 2010, which possesses an opaque purple color as well as notes of licorice, black truffles, sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, flowers and soil undertones. It is very full-bodied and exceptionally opulent, fat and round, but the vintage’s acids, precision, high glycerin, alcohol and extract are all present. “This gets my nod as the finest Gruaud Larose since the 2000 and 1990. The opaque purple-colored 2010 exhibits copious notes of Asian plum sauce, spice box, creme de cassis, loamy soil and a beefy/meaty character. It is full-bodied, dense and powerful, with stunning purity and no evidence of brett (a characteristic of the great Gruaud Larose wines made in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s). Château la Tour du Pin, Saint Émilion Grand Cru £315 / €345 per 12 bottles
We are very fortunate to have secured a small parcel of this top class wine owned and produced by Cheval Blanc from a small property just across the road. 85% Merlot & 15% Cabernet Franc. Intriguing nose. On the palate plenty of dark fruit, kirsch and mineral components complimented by good mouth feel. The tannins are ripe, but not intrusive. Perfumed finish, very long. Pretty classy. “An opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by impressively sweet floral notes intermixed with black currant and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with high but round tannins, the 2010 Boyd- Cantenac is exceptionally well-endowed, textured and pure. This under-the-radar estate (a classified growth in the famous 1855 rankings) never seems to catch the attention of consumers. It deserves better. Enjoy the 2010 for 25 or more years. 91 – 93 pts. “One of the finest Cantenac Browns made in the last half century, the 2010 may be even more impressive than the 2009. The tannins are slightly more serious and elevated than in the 2009, but the big, bold, full-bodied 2010 represents a remarkable turn around for this estate, which has now produced three straight top-flight vintages.
