The vineyards of Modat are situated in the commune of Cassagnes in the Agly valley near Perpignan on a plateau at a height of 200-300 metres. With its panoramic views over dry stone walls, vines and scrubland and the Cathar castle of Queribus, the landscape is as spectacular as the wines. Domaine Modat is currently organic and experimenting with biodynamics.
Made from Syrah grapes from Domaine Modats Pleus and Plas plots this wine shows the quality levels that a Syrah worked with small yields can attain.
On the nose there are hints of blackberry vanilla and melon while on the palate blackberry and olive tapenade predominate while a touch of bitter orange which gives this wine great originality. This is a powerful characterful wine with great balance and complexuty.
Decant it at least an hour before drinking to let the oxygen bring out a fuller, more silken quality.
Enjoy it with red meat or fresh goats cheese.
"Certified organic. Syrah, Grenache, Carignan on gneiss.
Smells of dried orange peel and coffee and pepper. Cassis liqueur, rich and brooding, inky texture and a kick of heat that burns up through the nose. Powerful, but beautifully sculptured, as if hewn out of something ancient. You can taste earth, the wild scent of garrigue, smoky black plums. Spice-scented finish. An elephantine grace."
