Domaine Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Roche Roulee 2017, 75cl
With an unbroken winemaking lineage in Alsace since 1620, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht came by its current name in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind. In the 1960s and 1970s, Leonard was able to expand the winery's collection of Grands Crus and other high quality vineyards. Since then, one of the hallmarks of every Zind-Humbrecht wine has been its overriding sense of terroir: the taste of the vineyard is always clear and unmistakable.
Zind-Humbrecht is managed by Olivier Humbrecht, one of the world's only winemakers to attain MW status. His passion for Alsatian wines and Biodynamic farming translates into a portfolio of legendary wines recognisable for their purity, intensity and, above all, their faithful expression of each individual vineyard site.
The 2017 vintage was a difficult vintage and one that could have been potentially catastrophic on the Gewurztraminer, a very early grape variety when bud burst in this place. To make matters worse, after the frost, the sun rose and warmed the young shoots too quickly, accentuating the shock of the cold. Some secondary or tertiary buds were able to grow afterwards, bringing this small crop of small bunches with very small berries! On the other hand, the fermentation was quick and as if to get revenge on Mother Nature, the yeasts left no chance for the sugar of the grapes.
A deep and sustained yellow/golden colour. The nose reveals an intense aromatic, florality with the typicity of the grape showing i.e. rose, lychee and blossoms. In the mouth, the wine imposes a nice spicy character well supported by ripe tannins. It is a powerful, dry wine with a pleasant and almost easy character that avoids the trap of varietal excess.
"This 2016 Gewurztraminer "Roche Calcaire" is clear, fresh and spicy on the nose, with lots of lychee, pepper and rose petal aromas. The palate is pure, lush, piquant and well-structured, with perfect roundness that doesn't taste too sweet but like ripe pears. The 2016 is very elegant and balanced and finishes with grip and stimulating salinity. It is a powerful but straight and stimulating Gewurzt with grip, salt and lots of spices. Excellent. Tasted at the Domaine in June 2018.
