Pikes The Merle Reserve Riesling 2018, 75cl
Fruit for the Merle Reserve Riesling comes from the Polish Hill region in Clare Valley. Perhaps more importantly though the wine is named after the matriarch of the Pikes family (Merle). This is their reserve wine with plenty of concentration length and a little lees ageing for extra complexity and an extra savoury character.
A brilliant pale green hue in the glass. The Merle tends to show subtlety and restraint in youth with a nose characterised by fresh citrus zest and hints of wet stone. On the palate a bristling spine of acidity brings the wine to life and highlights a core of pure fruit and exhilirating minerality. The wine is fresh, crisp and dry and the finish lasts.
Japanese seafood dishes especially sashimi and sushi, oysters, raw seafood, creamy sauces and goat cheese dishes all pair beautifully with this exceptional dry Riesling.
Another gorgeous “Merle” that will add to its growing reputation as one of Clare’s finest Rieslings. Drinks beautifully for those who like crisp, fresh Rieslings, but can be confidently cellared for 10-15 + years if you like classic bottle aged Aussie Riesling.
"Pears and sage. Clean and lean. Grey wet stones. Very stony and firm and mouth-washing. Rather good. Wonderful vertical acidity, reminds me of a cold sea washing on a stony pebble beach. Bit of green apple and citrus but it's so not about the fruit. This is all about structure and direction. Drink 2017 - 2028.
