      Tasting Notes and Description
Herdade do Portocarro has produced unquestionably distinctive wines from its very genesis. Its first wines - Herdade do Portocarro, Anima and Cavalo Maluco - were immediately positioned amongst the top rated national wines. The project is based on a philosophy of production of finest wines in limited and exclusive quantities. Wines that impress and enthrall, thus providing unique moments for the most demanding consumers. Herdade do Portocarro wines possess a intense and complex personality. They are tense and earthy but also extremely elegant and fresh. They are aimed at a sophisticated, educated and sensitive consumer who looks for and enjoys to taste the difference.

Cavalo Maluco (Crazy Horse) was a great Sioux chieftain who resisted the occupation and destruction of his people’s land and culture by the American Pioneers. Even after his capture he always remained true to his beliefs and codes of honour. A powerful and intense character, indomitable and irreverent but also sensitive and gracious like the wine which now takes his name. A wine which pays homage to all the “Crazy Horses” of this world who, passionate and fearless, think for themselves and tread their own path – who have a passion for distinction. Consequently, and also to underline its distinctive character, each year Cavalo Maluco will be dedicated to a personality who identifies with the spirit of the wine (with their initials on the label).

Grapes: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Petit Verdot with fermentation in oak vats. 18-month ageing period in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes: intense, deep pomegranate colour. A rich and complex aroma with floral notes, dark berries, sweet chocolate, spices and smoke. Very earthy. In the mouth, its structure is remarkable. The fresh notes awaken its aromatic richness and precede a long and persistent finale.

Nominated in 2015 and awarded in 2016 'Producer of the year' by the most widely read Portuguese wine magazine "Wine - Essencia do Vinho", Herdade do Portocarro winery is always rated among the top wine producers in Portugal.

"Round, toasty nose. Very welcoming. Lovely round tobacco-scented fruit with some evolution but a little bit dry (drought?) on the end. Mellow and with bags of character. Much better than an older vintage previously tasted. Drink 2018 -2028.
