Domaine Roger Sabon Lirac Chapelle de Maillac 2016 75cl
The Sabon family is an ancient and well-regarded name in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, first mentioned in documents dating to 1540. Eminently respectable and continually garnering new fans. A recent visit to the Domaine cemented this position.
Since 2001 Didier Negron has made the wines at Domaine Roger Sabon, but recently he’s begun to move away from demi-muids and barriques in favour of aging his family’s wines in concrete and large French oak foudres. While the terroir of Roger Sabon, with its high concentration of sand and limestone, has always been inclined to a more ethereal and delicate style of Châteauneuf, Didier’s changes in the cellar have amplified these qualities – the wines have never been more engaging and lovely.
The 2016 Lirac is an excellent introduction to the estate and what this fantastic team are doing.
Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Carignan make up the final blend.
"Somehow Roger Sabon has captured joy in the bottle. His 2016 Lirac by Roger Sabon boasts subtle spice and vanilla shadings upfront, then elevates the mood with easy-to-drink ripe cherry fruit that's concentrated yet never seems heavy on the palate. This medium to full-bodied wine is lush and fun to drink, ending with softly dusty tannins that lend a welcome savory edge to the long finish. It should drink well for close to a decade.
