      Tasting Notes
Located in Marlborough, New Zealand's premium wine growing region, Dog Point Vineyards produce wines that respect the natural integrity of the land from which they are made and, reflect the experience and passion of the people that make them.

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy, all former personnel at Cloudy Bay. The philosophy is total involvement by the partners from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines.

"Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with slight purple hues. The bouquet is tight and harmoniously packed with aromas of ripe, dark berry and plum aromas, lifted by violetty florals, spicy oak and a touch of complexing minerally reduction. Medium-full bodied, rich and sweet, vibrantly concentrated flavours of dark red berry fruit and spicy plums are supported by very fine grained tannin structure. The fruit is restrained and tightly bound, brooding at the core, resulting in a mouthfeel with an elegant density. Good acid tension and poise enriches the fruit and the palate flows with liveliness to a long, fine-textured, aromatic finish. This is a tightly packed, rich and finely structure Pinot Noir that will unfold greater complexity of the next 6-8 years. Serve with lamb, beef and venison. 18.5/20 pts.
      (raymondchanwinereviews, April 2014).

"Elegant, plush flavors of plum and black cherry are accented by black tea, spice and licorice notes. Gains momentum on the finish. 93 Points" (MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator, September 2016)

      The history/story of the vineyard.
Established in 2002 by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland, and James and Wendy Healy Dog Point is a small family owned label located at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka Valleys in Marlborough, New Zealand.
The name Dog Point dates back to the earliest settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. Early pioneering shepherds’ dogs either wandered off or became lost to eventually form a marauding pack that attacked the same sheep they were meant to be protecting.  Over time settlers were forced to cull the dogs and the area became known as Dog Point.
Succession planning has seen the partners still actively involved in the business but has created opportunities to introduce the next generation to the business to assist in areas of viticulture, winemaking and marketing.
All Dog Point fruit is estate grown, low cropped and handpicked from some of Marlborough’s oldest vines. These practices ensure that fruit is picked in excellent condition and at optimum physiological ripeness.
Organic philosophies drive our approach to wine growing and the property operates under a New Zealand organic certification programme and the New Zealand Sustainable Winegrowing Programme.
      Winemaking style/philosophy.
Specialist wine producers since 2002, Dog Point insists on low cropped vines and hand-picked fruit whilst adhering to an organic regime.  Their philosophy is to produce regionally distinctive wines that combine both modern and traditional winemaking approaches, to produce hand crafted, high quality wines that will drink well now and age respectably.
The company produces four wines from three varieties; two Sauvignon Blanc’s, one of which is fermented and aged in barrel, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir.
