Cal Pla Crianza Red 2006 Pk 6
Pack of 6 x 750 ml Bottle
The wine is made in Porrera, DOCa Priorat at the Juncosa family's owned and managed winery. The area has a unique microclimate with both continental and Mediterranean influences. It is affected by the dry cold north winds of the former and the moist warm breezes. Temperatures may fall to -6C in winter and rise to a maximum of 35C in summer. Joan Sangenis produced this 50% Garnacha, 45% Cariñena and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The average yield was a miserly 1.5kg per vine. It was aged 14 months on lees in in French (85%) and American (15%) oak and bottled without filtering or clarification. It is a bright red ruby colour with a nose of damson fruit with nutmeg, cinnamon and white pepper. On the palate, it is mediium bodied and dry with concentrated redcurrant, blackcurrant and gooseberry fruit with good acidity and soft, leathery tannins.
For something with a bit more heft, try priorat, which seems more realistically priced lately .... the deliciously mellow Cal Pla Tinto Crianza Priorat from the earlier 2006 vintage was the stand-out wine at a recent tasting put on by West Country merchant Red And White. (Fiona Beckett, Guardian, 12 Jan 2013).
Juan Sangenis Juncosa's winery was listed in the prestigious Top 100 New Wave Spanish Wines.
